"One million dollar guidepost" begins with a warning letter from Kaito Kid arriving at the storage facility of the Onoe Zaibatsu in Hakodate, Hokkaido. Kid is after a Japanese sword connected to Toshizo Hijikata, vice-chief of the Shinsengumi who lived during the late Edo period. The famous detective from the west, Heiji Hattori, Conan Edogawa and others are also visiting Hakodate for a Kendo tournament.
